Ormolu refers to a decorative technique that involves applying a gold-colored alloy to bronze or brass objects, often used in furniture, clocks, and other ornamental pieces. The term "ormolu" comes from the French word or moulu, meaning "ground gold," as the alloy was originally made by grinding gold and mixing it with mercury.



This gilded metal technique gained popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in France, where it was linked to luxury and high-quality craftsmanship. Ormolu was frequently used to create exquisite decorative objects and furniture, typically for aristocratic residences and palaces.
